How to make gold in Mists of Pandaria - Part 1: Herbalism

With each new expansion, some items become a lot more valuable than what they are today. That said I will be dedicating posts for each profession that has access to items that new monks and pandas will find useful. MOP is not here yet, but you can start stockpiling useful stuff and sell some even today in certain cases, like Goldthorn which is always valuable.

Stockpiling before an expansion launches will boost you towards the magical gold limit!

Choosing the herbs to stockpile
There's a ton of herbs that are required for profession leveling, but I've bolded the ones that you should focus on. Either they have a page of their own on this blog, I've stockpiled them myself in a previous expansion with success or there's usually not enough for sale, meaning huge profit even before the expansion launches. You can use the search feature below the category list if you want to see if it has been mentioned before.

The list is provided by wow-professions.

Here's the approximate materials required for 1-525 in Alchemy:
  • 59 x Peacebloom
  • 59 x Silverleaf
  • 93 x Briarthorn
  • 20 x Mageroyal
  • 33 x Bruiseweed
  • 45 x Stranglekelp
  • 20 x Liferoot
  • 30 x Kingsblood
  • 35 x Goldthorn
  • 10 x Wild Steelbloom
  • 25 x Sungrass
  • 45 x Khadgar's Whisker
  • 10 x Blindweed
  • 40 x Gromsblood
  • 30 x Sorrowmoss
  • 15 x Dreamfoil
  • 45 x Golden Sansam
  • 18 x Mountain Silversage
  • 50 x Felweed
  • 10 x Terocone
  • 35 x Dreaming Glory
  • 10 x Netherbloom
  • 20 x Talandra's Rose
  • 5 x Pygmy Suckerfish
  • 75 x Goldclover
  • 30 x Tiger Lily
  • 25 x Adder's Tongue
  • 20 x Icethorn
  • 40 x Lichbloom
  • 69 x Cinderbloom
  • 18 x Stormvine
  • 39 x Azshara's Veil
  • 25 x Heartblossom
  • 5 x Volatile Life
Keep in mind that the above list is from my personal experience. On your realm the bolded herbs may be worthless.

But I wouldn't touch Cata herbs. At least on my realms there's a ton of bots still farming them. Even now there's at least a ten thousand Cinderblooms for sale and more is appearing every day. Otherwise Cinderbloom and Azshara's Veil may be worth the effort.

While there's great deals in the auction house every day, sometimes it's better to have the profession, herbalism in this case due to the few super expensive herbs which remain mandatory to anyone leveling alchemy. Stranglekelp is a good example. Each stack costs 200-400 gold currently on my main realm, so farming a bunch of stacks myself should make me even more gold. In this case there's no point waiting for MOP, so it's better to sell them right away!

Gathering is very much about making surgical strikes with whatever mat is expensive at the moment. That can change daily.
I remember making 6k farming Ashara's Veil in one weekend earlier on in the expansion. Not when it launched (4.2?). Knowing where best to invest your time is the key to making gold for those professions.

I am buying tons of Cata herbs even though they are in great supply, why? Because you will see a huge return on your investment in about 90 days after MoP releases. The bots will stop once they see their sales drop and move on to ore or fish as they always do. Then once MoP drops they will move to MoP herbs and the market will find a shortage of Cata herbs.

I a, buying them right now for an average of 25-30 gold per stack and I think I will be able,to,resell them in a few months for 150-200 gold per stack. Of course this is speculation with some risk, but I know I won't lose gold on it.

Good tip, thanks for sharing it, I'm a longtime herbalist but I'm a starter in the gold making and this looks interesting.

Stockpiling Cata herbs will pay off too, indeed. But it takes way longer for them to be profitable to resell. Same happened with WOTLK as well.
